Safety Tips for Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks is one of the largest lakes around. The Lake covers over 54,000 acres of land and contains over 1,150 miles of shoreline. That is a lot of water to cover and many boats are attracted to this Lake year round. It takes everyone working together and practicing safe boating procedures to make for a happy boating lifestyle here. Our boat club at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to give you a few safety tips for boating at the Lake area. If you are interested in having guaranteed boat availability for half the cost of actually owning a boat, call Freedom Boat Club today at 573-302-0392 for more information.

First-Time Boater?

If you are a first-time boater, meaning you have never driven a boat on your own before, you may consider checking out the Lake of the Ozarks Captains Association. Even if you are an experienced boater, there is still a lot of good safety information to check out. This is a professional not for profit groups who seeks to promote safety, education and good fellowship between operators, The Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council, the United States Coast Guard, and the Missouri State Patrol Water Patrol Division.

Safety Tips for Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks

There are certain guidelines you can follow that will make your boating experience a little easier and safer.
  • Be weather conscious.
  • Use your common sense, for example, don't taking a boating trip if you know there is a storm coming.
  • Designate an assistant on the boat.
  • Develop a float plan, just in case.
  • Use life jackets when needed.
  • If you're the one driving the boat, drive sober.
  • Take swimming lessons, if you don't know how to swim.
  • Enroll in a boating course.
  • Take advantage of a FREE vessel safety check from the US Coast Guard.
  • Have a weather radio on board.

Required Items By Water Patrol to Have on Your Boat at All Times

You must have the following items on your boat by law:
  • One throwable PFD
  • One wearable PFD for each passenger on board
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Boat registration
  • Sounding device

The beauty of having a boat membership at the Lake of the Ozarks with us is that your top of the line boat you will be using will already have all of these required devices on it, so you won't have to worry about supplying them yourself.
